It is important to ask the right questions of the right people and at the right time. Ask cultural questions in earlier interviews, and ones related to benefits in later interviews or before accepting an offer.

- Do line managers work directly with those they manage?
- How often do line managers meet with those they manage?

- Does the company established clear objectives for employees to aim for?

- Does the company emphasise promotion from within?
- How many levels of software engineer exist?
- Do you use a role mapping like SFIA? If so, what level is the role I am applying for?
- ED&I
- Do you collect ED&I statistics? If so, how often?
- What measures does the company have in place to improve the numbers of underrepresented groups?

- What is the average year on year increase in salary across the organisation?

- Which pension provider do you use?
- Do you allow people to pay into their existing pension provider?
- Do you allow for pension contributions to be actioned via salary sacrifice?
- Do you offer a percentage match for employer contributions to pension?
- Are these details part of the employment contract?
